North Western Bee Products (NWBP) is a producer-owned company buying honey and beeswax from about 10,000 traditional bark hive beekeepers in Zambia. The initiative was launched by the Zambian Government in 1979 with funding from the German Technical Development Agency, and has since been successfully privatized, continuing to deliver an increasing level of services to the producers and still meeting its objectives thirty years after funding has been discontinued. Using traditional methods, beekeepers hoist cylindrical hives made from bark high into the trees, which they later climb to harvest. This environmentally sustainable practice yields honey that is free of pesticides, additives, bacteria, anti-biotics and pollution. All the beekeepers are shareholders and the local district council has a 17% share in the business. 80% of the product is exported to Europe, to stores such as Waitrose and Sainsburys and to The Body Shop for use in their products.
